DANIEL R. NOVACK

Dan has been described as "an enterprising First Amendment attorney" by Vanity Fair. He has also been hung up on by the Justice Department's FOIA office . . . repeatedly.

Dan enjoys writing about and teaching media law. His reasoned analysis of First Amendment controversies of the day can frequently be found at the Hollywood Reporter or his podcast SLANDERTOWN. His kneejerk reactions are on Twitter. He is a sometimes Professor of Media Law.

As a FOIA lawyer, Dan has sued the government a lot. In 2018, he liberated tens of thousands of pages of materials concerning the Church of Scientology from the FBI. All of Dan’s FOIA representations are undertaken pro bono, because he loves journalism (and because he has a day job in publishing). To paraphrase Conan the Barbarian, if you ask Dan what is best in life, he will say: "To sue for public records, see redactions driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of the Assistant United States Attorneys, Civil Division."

Prior to his career in law, Dan's news media experience included running various school newspapers and getting run out of various school newspapers.

If you ask Dan why he commissioned a rhinoceros for his website logo, he will claim it's a metaphor for his legal philosophy: "Rhinos never backpedal." That is a bogus fact.  Dan just likes rhinos.

Angela Chung

Angela is an intern with Novack Media Law currently studying at Berkeley Law.

Angela is focused on the intersection of media, technology, and free speech. She hopes to use her expanding knowledge of media and First Amendment law to ensure that the Internet and 'new media' can continue to be avenues for creative and diverse expression. She also loves to read, hates book bans, and puts her nosiness inquisitiveness to use through FOIA requests to support journalism. Outside of the classroom, you can find Angela becoming an expert on "Criminal Minds" dialogue, buying books even after saying she should finish the ones she has at home, and seeking coffee recs.

CLAIRE KUO

Claire is an intern with Novack Media Law currently studying at Columbia Law School.

Largely informed by her background in creative writing, Claire is interested in media law and free speech. She hopes to support authors in confronting issues such as (unfortunately too many) book bans, evolving technology, and (hopefully few) defamation lawsuits.

She’s excited to expand her work into FOIA requests and journalism. In her free time, Claire spends her time reading and writing in parks, tracking down Taiwanese food in NYC, and taking silly quizzes like what vegetable she is.
